1. Decide whether the cable should be replaceable
A detachable cable can extend service life and support upgrades, but it adds connector cost, assembly control and compatibility questions. A fixed cable can simplify the product and reduce connection points. The correct choice depends on product position, expected use and after-sales strategy.
2. 0.78mm 2-pin: simple orientation, multiple geometries
The 0.78mm 2-pin format is common in universal-fit IEMs. Buyers must still confirm flat or recessed mounting, pin exposure, polarity, connector angle and shell clearance. A cable described only as 2-pin may not fit every 2-pin shell.
- Pin diameter and spacing
- Flush, recessed or protective socket
- Left/right and polarity marking
- Connector angle and ear-hook shape
- Insertion force and retention
- Replacement-cable reference drawing
3. MMCX: rotating connection with fit-control needs
MMCX connectors allow rotation, which can help cable routing. The mechanical fit and retention should be validated through repeated connection cycles and movement tests. Housing design, connector supplier and assembly process influence long-term reliability.
4. Type-C IEMs add digital electronics
A Type-C IEM can include a DAC, DSP, microphone and digital controls. Buyers should confirm supported phones, computers and operating systems, call and remote behavior, power consumption, sample rate direction and firmware responsibility. USB-C shape alone does not guarantee audio compatibility.
5. Specify the cable beyond its appearance
Define conductor direction, braid or jacket, length, plug, microphone, remote keys, strain relief, ear hook, color and packaging. Avoid unverified material or purity claims. The production specification should use supplier records and measurable construction details.
6. Test the complete cable-system interaction
Test intermittent contact, connector retention, repeated insertion, cable flexing, plug strain, microphone function and remote compatibility. Repeat the checks on actual target devices and with the approved housing, not only on a loose cable sample.
7. Put replacement and compatibility information in the package
If replacement cables will be sold, provide the exact connector description and orientation. Manuals and product pages should state device and function compatibility accurately, especially for Type-C audio and microphone controls.

Buyer questions
Is every 0.78mm 2-pin IEM cable interchangeable?
No. Pin spacing may be similar, but recessed or flush sockets, polarity, connector angle and shell geometry can differ. Confirm the drawing and physical fit for the selected model.
Why choose MMCX for an IEM?
MMCX allows cable rotation and replacement. Buyers should validate retention, movement noise, repeated connection and the specific supplier's mechanical consistency.
Does every USB-C phone support every Type-C IEM?
No. Compatibility depends on the DAC or digital audio implementation, operating system and supported microphone or remote functions. Test on the target device list.
What should be included in an IEM cable RFQ?
Include connector type and geometry, length, conductor construction, jacket or braid, plug, microphone, remote keys, ear hook, color, packaging and target-device compatibility.
